Shogi Pieces and How They Move

Shogi has 8 kinds of pieces. All except the king and the gold general can promote in the last three ranks.

King (Ōshō / Gyokushō)

Movement: One square in any direction.

When promoted: Does not promote. Checkmate ends the game.

Rook (Hisha)

Movement: Any number of squares orthogonally.

When promoted: Dragon (Ryū): rook moves plus one square diagonally.

Bishop (Kakugyō)

Movement: Any number of squares diagonally.

When promoted: Horse (Uma): bishop moves plus one square orthogonally.

Gold General (Kin)

Movement: One square forward, diagonally forward, sideways or straight back (6 directions).

When promoted: Does not promote.

Silver General (Gin)

Movement: One square forward or diagonally in any direction (5 directions).

When promoted: Moves like a gold general.

Knight (Keima)

Movement: Jumps two forward and one sideways, over other pieces. Forward only.

When promoted: Moves like a gold general.

Lance (Kyōsha)

Movement: Any number of squares straight forward.

When promoted: Moves like a gold general.

Pawn (Fuhyō)

Movement: One square straight forward; captures the same way.

When promoted: Tokin: moves like a gold general.

Promotion is optional, except that a pawn or lance reaching the last rank, or a knight reaching the last two ranks, must promote — otherwise it could never move again.
